A 49-year-old man who was critically injured in an assault on Halloween has died from his injuries.

Alfred Vea of Hilo was pronounced dead at The Queen’s Medical Center on Oahu at 10:34 a.m. Wednesday, police said. The Honolulu Medical Examiner’s office is scheduled to conduct an autopsy today to determine the exact cause of death.

The suspect, 31-year-old Kallen Imade of Mountain View, has been charged with manslaughter and remains in police custody in lieu of $250,000 bail. He is slated to make his initial court appearance today in Hilo.

At 11:30 p.m. Saturday, South Hilo Patrol officers responded to a report of an unconscious man in a parking lot on the 100 block of Hema Street. Witnesses reported that the victim had been involved in an affray with another man and that the other man had left the area.

Vea was taken to Hilo Medical Center with a head injury and later transferred to Queen’s Medical Center on Oahu.

Imade turned himself in to police Tuesday morning.
